The Limousin breed originated in a region of central France - rugged, granite country - where the summers are hot and winters are severe.

The documented history of Limousin goes back more than 7,000 years to to an area surrounding the French city of Limoges where rough cave paintings showing the characteristics of the breed have been discovered and carbon dated. The Limousin herd book was established in 1886.

Today the Limousin breed can be found in more than fifty countries from the northern-most herds of Finland and the Commonwealth of Soviet States to countries such as Cuba, South Africa and China.

  • the largest breed in the UK
  • the third largest breed in the USA
  • the fifth largest breed in Canada
  • the sixth largest breed in Australia

The first Limousin cross calf in Australia was born in 1973 and the first full-blood Limousins arrived in Australia in 1975. The Limousin breed has grown rapidly since then with over 10,000 cattle now registered annually. This makes it the sixth largest breed of the 40-odd Beef breed Societies in Australia.

Limousins currently hold about 5% of the market for the 100,000 bulls required by the Australian beef industry each year.

With the premium price for Limousin cross cattle being obtained in all states the share of the market held by Limousin is growing.
